Project of the day

One of many projects today. I am animating a new News bug for our station. The current one is a bit “ugly”. Just clashes with the rest of the graphics. So I re animating it. I am coming up with 3 styles and compositions to choose from and pick apart. Also working on random ads for the web site.

Mug shot

Working at a news station we get lots of crazy stuff. The best are mug shots. Here is the best. What’s going through his head?

Simplicity

Sometimes trying to come up with something simple can get really complicated. I am working on something that will be used as an email signature. My boss would like it to be more simple than the one we have know, which is fine with me. I’m not a big fan of it either. So when they say “simple”, how “simple” do they mean? I am focusing on our current ad campaign and keeping within that style. It’s very simple. Mainly just a logo with a bit of a swoosh. Not terrible.

Something inside me wants to do more with it. Animate it maybe? I want to give. Fw good choices to work with, that’s how I work. We do news t this station as well as regular programing. I am going to give them a choice or 2 for a news related one and the same for just the station. We will see how this goes. Here are the rough ideas…

Seriously

Seriously. Who parks like this??? This person decided that they wanted to park in the middle of the isle. Didn’t really seem to notice that they were clearly outside of the designated parking lines. For real! Not only that, other people thought this would be a good idea so they parked the same way next to the dork.

On to the big stuff

Well the MSHSL tournaments are over for now on 45. It was another successful year! Now on to the redesign. We are starting the process for redesigning the entire graphics package for the broadcast. We have used the same look for a few years, and it’s only been in Standard Definition, so now it’s time to enter the HD world with a completely new look. I’ve been thinking about issues and questions that seem to come up a lot with the old design. How can we make the sponsor areas a bit more flexible for the client? It has often been requested if we can change the colors for a client to match their look. The universal answer is ways no. So what I am going to try and do with this is make more open. We have had a set size and shape for the sponsor logos to be placed. So I have been thinking about how to do this.

Other things I am needing to think about is the score strip that is displayed at all times during game play. I Have been watching many different broadcasters and studying how they design their elements and they all work together. I have noticed that on FOX they recently started doing more of a “bug” in the upper left hand corner that is compressed vs the almost standard “strip” that sits at the top of the screen. I have thought about doing ours this way. Seems like a nice idea, but again, we will have to see how a sponsor logo can be incorporated. Our first broadcast for this new design will be for the Minnesota State High School football tournament (Prep Bowl 30).

I have also thought about changing it up for the different tournaments; football, hockey and basketball. For hockey it might be more practical to have a strip at the top of the screen. For football having a bug int he corner or even the strip at the bottom of the screen might work out well also. We shall find out as this process and designs evolve.
